
Recently, with the last unit officially put into commercial operation, State Grid Xinyuan Jiangsu Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station has been fully completed and put into power generation. Hidden among the green mountains of Jurong, this "super power bank" adds another reliable regulating power source to the East China Power Grid with a total installed capacity of 1.35 million kilowatts.
It has set three world records: it boasts the world's highest pumped storage dam at 182.3 meters – equivalent to a 60-story building – holding a reservoir capacity of 17.07 million cubic meters (about 1.2 times the water volume of West Lake). It is also the world's highest asphalt concrete face rockfill dam and has completed the world's largest reservoir basin filling project. Due to its technical complexity and engineering representativeness, it is known as a living "encyclopedia" in the industry.
Behind this grand project are 6 reversible units with a single capacity of 225,000 kilowatts operating continuously, with an annual designed power generation capacity of 1.35 billion kilowatt-hours – enough to meet the annual electricity demand of about 360,000 households. Every cycle of pumping and generating electricity accurately regulates the peak and valley of the power grid, and also poses an extreme test to all equipment in the station, especially the crisscrossing cable network covering the entire station.
At the core of the power station, cables must withstand instantaneous current shocks caused by frequent start-ups and shutdowns, complex electromagnetic interference, and humidity in underground caverns. Any slight performance defect may lead to signal transmission interruption, equipment malfunction or even system paralysis. This means that cables serving such world-class projects must possess extraordinary characteristics: high pressure resistance, high temperature resistance, excellent flame retardancy, long service life and stable signal transmission.
