Recently, Geng Tao, Chief International Customer Officer, Chen Qi, International Customer Officer of Far East Marine Cable Co., Ltd., together with Consultant Mutitu, led a delegation to Kenya. They held high-level meetings separately with Joseph Siror, CEO of Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), and Kipkemoi Kibias, Acting Managing Director of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).

As Kenya’s largest power distributor, KPLC undertakes national power procurement, distribution and sales, covering most regions across the country. KETRACO is responsible for the planning, construction and operation of Kenya’s high-voltage transmission network. Currently, KETRACO is advancing multiple major power transmission projects. The Phase II project of the 400kV Kimuka Substation, backed by the World Bank, has been launched to address grid overload in Nairobi. Meanwhile, the 132kV Kitui Substation has been completed, which will greatly improve power supply stability in eastern Kenya.

Kenya’s power demand is growing rapidly. In December 2025, the country’s peak power consumption exceeded 2,439 MW for the first time, setting successive record highs. The growth is driven by multiple factors: industrial consumers account for over half of KPLC’s total power sales; newly added power users surpassed 400,000; and ongoing urbanization has fueled rising demand for household electrical and refrigeration equipment. The Kenyan government is fully advancing national electrification, targeting universal electricity access by 2030.

Furthermore, the rapid development of electric mobility has brought new pressure to the power grid. According to KPLC data, Kenya’s electric vehicle stock surged from 5,294 in 2024 to 35,000 in 2025, with annual power consumption jumping 188% year-on-year, placing higher requirements on distribution network upgrading.

Both sides conducted in-depth alignment on cable demands for Kenya’s ongoing and planned power transmission and transformation projects, and exchanged extensive views on key topics including technical standard adaptation, delivery lead time and supply chain assurance.

This high-level visit marks a substantive step for Far East in expanding business across Kenya and the broader East African market. Leveraging the full industrial chain advantages of Far East Holdings in Power Energy + Computing Power + AI, Far East Marine Cable will continue to deepen its presence in Africa, delivering reliable and intelligent cable network solutions for the upgrading of Kenya’s power infrastructure.
